Pyramidal structure of “upper ten” in Indian context —

Here, the concept of “upper ten” is not being described in consonance with the definition suggested by American author Nathaniel Parker Willis. He coined this term in the year of 1844 for wealthiest ten thousand residents of aristocratic social class of New York city. This term is being described with an altogether different aspect  and here, the term “top ten” is most suitable in stead of “upper ten.” This term “top ten” helps more impressively to construct the Pyramidal structure of the Indian society in long run.

In context to Indian social system, it stands to a quite different footing. India being as a large Country consists of many “States” ( Pranta or Pradesh in vernacular.) In our Constitution it rightly been described as ” India, that is a Union of States.” In a way, this system copies the American federal States. These States in dealing and in running of governance  have been granted the autonomous status regard some subjects of administration whilst regard some others every State follows the policies prescribed by the Central Government. But here, we are describing the subject matter apart from the political angle and with sociological stand point view.

Here comes a Nation with several States, in which to ease the contents of the blog we pick the  “State” as our model to describe our pyramidal set up. Every State is consisted of several districts and every district is majorly divided into Urban and Rural areas. Hence the basic unit of every such State is either a “village” or ” Ward” accordingly. This is the generally accepted format. Now we begin to understand the Pyramidal Structure from the basic unit onward.

Often a medium size “village” has got a population of about two thousand denizens. So we may presume, given this population the shape of families, this village becomes a cluster of about two hundred fifty families roughly. The “ten families” which are more affluent and well off in comparison  to rest of families of village, they will be counted in the “top ten.” Likely to this, in this population, ten most politically active persons are to be given place in “top ten leaders” of the society. Again, ten persons, who are highly educated than rest of people need to be selected as “top ten.” The same formulae be applied for people highly skilled in some other field. All these people can be placed in the category of influential people of the society of a village. These persons are forming the base of the foundation line and upper lines of the pyramid.

In our Indian structure, the cluster of some villages form a ” block” at the administration level. Every such block at least contains twenty to thirty villages. Every district may have six to twelve such blocks of rural population. Now, we will sort out “top ten” affluent families, highly educated persons, politically and socially active persons etc at the level of the cluster of these villages or block. Further, from the group of these “blocks” top ten persons be selected in the same way. As described, in India often every district consists of a main city and other suburban location. And, where precincts of these areas ends, the large area of rural population begins in shape of villages.

The same process of “top ten” is to be considered regard city area In “ward wise,” and onward according to administrative set up, up to the city top channel. So, at the district level, conclusive of city as well as rural area, we finally may choose the top ten influential persons on various scales and place them a seat in this pyramid accordingly. Since, every State in our country is divided in region or zone. Now the sorting out of further “top ten” be taken out there. Lastly, all zones conclusively will produce “top ten.” This pyramid as such, one after another line is taking an onward step with more refined and successful people to construct itself.

Again, the “top ten” have to be sorted out from the “Union of States” to complete the uppermost part of this pyramid. Now, this complete pyramidal structure is consisted of influential people belonging to all callings of life. This includes, Businessmen, doctors, engineers, advocates, highly educated people, artisans, writers, professors and so on. All these are supposed to become the part of this social pyramid. These people suo moto  play the role model for other people legging behind. Besides, their success too is bound to motivate other people who have been yet been able to occupy a place in this pyramid and still struggling.

Indubitably, the participation of all these people as apart of the pyramidal structure, certainly has to be proven significant.  In the american definition, directly “top   ten thousand” influential people were included out of about some millions people. But one thing to be taken notice of is, a society merely doesn’t consist of  a city only. It has to be perceived from other angles also. Every “social system” has got its own “metabolism distinctly. A fellow, who is placed in the lower most layer of our this pyramid may rise to another upward layer and can rise to further advanced stage.

As per the American definition, those upper ten thousand people were “like” a “saturation level” of the society.  But the metabolism of a social system always keeps on going and is subject to major changes. This given concept of “top ten’ is an influential factor and a quintessential for the growth of a social system and it can’t be ignored. The definition of every term  is always subject to a scrutiny  and in context to Indian society this pyramidal structure is most suitable. Why for in caption it was emphasized on ” in Indian context.” Penned by — Vinay Pharasi —
