More than the requirement or the Consumerism.....
In our diurnal banal routine, when we come back home from office or market. A space, outside the main door we fix, to put off our shoes properly, and a pair of extra slipper kept there to be put on. Wearing that, we enter into the house. Inside the house, if we plan to visit washroom, there at the door sill another pair of foot wear, we use for washroom purposes. Inside washroom, an extra small towel we find there to dry up our wet hands. Outside the washroom, we drop our specific footwear and get ourselves reinstalled into slipper and stroll inside the house.
Multi choices
Again, for daily bath we are having separate towel, for bathing special soap and to wash the hands after attending the “call of nature,” another kind of wash liquid we need. To rinse our clothe, we are having at least two different types of detergent powder, as per the requirement of the fabric. The water we use in wash room is quite different from potable water, which oozes out from water purifier.
This water purifier, in its purification process wastes out more than double of water we consume. And this wastage of water mocks at our system, when world at large facing the crisis of paucity of drinking water. It’s known to us that in majority of Nations, some cities are declared as “zero water level” cities, due to water level dropping down.
The time with paucity
Now think about above mentioned “comforts.'” Try to ask People, who are in their fifties or more of life period, who easily can realize the truth of economic use of facilities in hand. For this, they simply have to recall the conditions, prevailed at the time of their childhood or in teen age. Recalling of that bygone era, running or playing in streets bare footed. ( agreed, this miserable situation no body should have experienced.) How many of them were equipped with foot wears.
Certainly foot wears were there, but either for school purpose or for special occasions. The possession of a single pair of leather boots, helped us to ensconce us in “divine comfort zone” forever. The water came from only one source and had to be used for all purposes, including washing of clothes, kitchen utensils and drinking etc, etc.
Excessive use of goods
I don’t purportedly say that “past was golden as such,’ or we should tread on barefooted or should not drink purified potable water. When I mention about the consumerism at the main caption, I had a connotation. Simple fact is, we are using the accessory appliances or consumer items in the capacity, “more than our requirements.” We are “eager cum anxious” in consuming the goods.
We are incapacitated to manage our consuming habits. It’s because somebody else is managing us in invisibly, in the name of ” consumerism” or “commercialization.” This managing element of “market-ism,” victoriously generating a psychological terror in our psyche. This is done, in the name of health drive, beauty consciousness or personality development etc. We people, consciously or unconsciously falling prey to that delusion. Sooner or later, we should find a way to manage our needs otherwise this horrendous delusion will engulf everything. Penned by– Vinay Pharasi…
