Not so recently, a mind blowing video clipping got viral in social media. Basically, it belonged to some Southern province of India. It sounded of its own unique kind. In this video, local police seemed to arrive on a road side muddy hovel, that belonged to a beggar. This beggar was passed away, as an issue less and unclaimed person ( leaving no one behind as a known inheritor). As it is the part of the police procedure in such kind of cases, Police arrives on the spot of occurrence makes a search of the bag and baggage of the deceased left behind.
The spectacular disclosure
This process is observed, with an intent to find some clue or trace of any known kith and kin. Added with the procedure, to make an inventory of leftover goods or chattels of the deceased, recovered as such. Along with, police happen to seal the dead body, in presence of some reputed persons of the locality, and dispatch the dead body for postmortem . In total, police perform all these formalities, so that, someone as an claimant to the dead body appear in person. So the police became free from further liabilities of cremating the unclaimed dead body.
In this particular case, though no any such “clue,” police was able to detect. But, upon searching the hovel of the beggar, a huge amount of money in shape of big paper currency was recovered. That all was stuffed in every possible rags, old bags, cushions and mattresses, and even in polythene scrapes. The amount took long for police to count in total. For, finally it was declared as more than 18.5 millions in Indian Rupee. Was it not a Mind blowing news?
Uproar on recovery
The news of recovery of such a huge amount, as “alms”from a beggar hut, had had so many angles. These angles were mainly from the perspective of social debate. Since, it naturally evoked an uproar of its own kind. First angle was, police had not anticipated such big recovery of paper currency. Had police some inkling of such a handsome recovery, they won’t count it by sitting on the road side. Instead they would have brought the entire belongings to the police station. There, behind the walls, secretly they would count it. And, as the police working culture is, they hardly would have announced the disclosure of recovery of an amount, that would be around one lac. One lac in India is equal to 100,000 rupee.
The rest of the amount, certainly be distributed as a prize money among the honest officials clandestinely, in lieu of toilsome recovery and counting of money. Such kind of sordid police procedure of actual recovery and official disclosure, is said to be an all India Police tradition. This kind of practice is observed whole through the police system. Police officials, when in a hobnob with civilian friends in good mood, happened to boast about this all.
So many angles for debate
The another humanitarian angle of this recovery was. The fresher recruit as a constable, when came to witness the recovery of such huge amount, were but natural had to plunge into the depression. For, they after having counting their salary in ratio to their life long service tenure, could not secure such handsome amount. This question of not being able to earn such big amount, despite their being properly educated and securing the government job. That’s too, after qualifying the examination both physical and written, and the salary they obtain were so meager in return. Some of them but natural would have greased the palm of the seniors officials to secure the job. This too would have aggravated the depression.
Bizarre thoughts
A probability certainly is there. A motivational thought would have flashed in their mind. It was far better to enter into the beggar’s profession, than to try for the government job. For, it was obvious beggary proven far better than the police service. Any how, it seems, “the man in rags” when died, he died with a saturated feelings of a multimillionaire. In our old fables and sayings, such type of persons rightly been described as “jewel in rags.”
An another angle, that is social one and became the issue of the hot debate in common public was. When this rogue was in possession of such a huge amount, why he chose to die on the road? He easily could have afforded an apartment to die with lavish life style, and with a stomach full of delicacies!” Upon this point of “stomach full of delicacies!” was put up a question mark.
An anthropologist, scorned the rest of people. Through his study in the field, he elicited that such beggars, on their daily routine used to take rich, lavish and delicious dinner. This heavy dinner was always supposed to be added with costly wine. In support of that, he mentioned his own witnessed experiences, that he proclaimed, he peeped in by himself, into the daily life style of such beggars keenly.
An another anthropologist had a more realistic contention. He was of the opinion, begging is not an easier work. It needs hard work and is toilsome vocation. Hence, the hard earned money in every condition, should be kept is safe custody as the the beggar did virtually. Although, one fault beggar had on his part that at least he should have nominated someone as his inheritor. But despite of all this debate, every one , who came to know about this episode had a regret, “alas! I would be a beggar!” Penned BY– Vinay pharasi…..
