Labyrinth of food channels on TV (in Indian context)

Every TV channel depends upon its selective audience, and this audience select their own liked channel as per the choice. Some focus on “news channels,” other on channels relaying program related to crime stories or family drama, some may have mixed choices. But there is a specific channel that attracts the attention of women in general. Women, whenever they have some spare time, they switch on to that channel. This type of channel, specifically relays the program pertaining to the cooking. In such relays, incessantly, multitude of recipes of foods, with a complete procedure is displayed there.

                                               Recipe channels

 This “specific channel” is “food channel” which may bear any “name” relating to culinary. I call them “recipe channels.” These channels air the demo, how to prepare some specific dish, be it indigenous or exotic one. Such programs are relayed with pompousness and grandeur. Astonishingly these programs are watched by women of all classes of the society. The first impression that generates in the mind by watching these programs comes up as, ” Wow ! With what a devotion, these channels relaying the program to prepare the healthy food.”

 But have you ever realized, how come with such limited numbers of audiences, these channels are capable to exist in this age of competition or TRP. Whilst, other channels, once being on the top TRP list, have vanished from the race. So what is the “labyrinth” or “secret” of there being in the race with comparatively number of audience.

Just hammer your mind to extricate the riddle! Have you ever prepared the recipe suggested by these food channels? The answer is, “yes, we planned for that, but when we tried to cook the same dish, we realized that “kitchen wares” needed for the recipe we lacked.”

In the projected kitchen on the TV show, the chef of the show is standing in a “high class modular kitchen.” The first most stage of the show is, you should be in possession of that kind of ultra-modern modular kitchen. This means, a kitchen harnessed with shelves, chimney, dish washer, a modern gas stove with multiple furnaces. Apart from this, it needed a double door refrigerator, microwave, oven, induction stove added with range of non-stick utensils and so on.

 Not only this, if you are a North Indian and planning to prepare a “South Indian cuisine” like Idli or dosa, then? You now need an another range of kitchen appliances. The induction stove may be with in the reach of your pocket, but its appliances to support the cooking set is quite costly. Here you are in hand, with a long list of frying pan to prepare rice, tea, and other different recipes. Further, if you choose to buy low cost utensils for your induction furnace, certainly you are going to spoil you recipe. And for a “standard one” appliances, it costs heavily.

To prepare a cake or ice-cream, certainly you need other kind of set of appliances, supported by microwave and a double door refrigerator. Now you calculate and estimate total expenditure by your self . Along with,  please don’t forget to count the “specific set of appliances, needed for microwave. Apart from this, the “mixture” set along with its “set of blades,” and the range of knives and cleavers for salad etc..

The fact is, the standard kitchen you need to prepare these food items, you can only find in the kitchen of “upper middle class.”  Look further, that class never prepare all these food items by them selves. They hire the services of “domestic help” for the purpose. Rather, they prefer to relish all these delicacies at some highly paid restaurant or food court. No doubt, this class maintains a “high standard ultra-modular kitchen,” but just with the purpose to display their status.

                                               Reality check

Now come to the “reality.” Who are supposed to become the “trap” of these food channels show. Simply, the women of “middle and lower class”. They are busy now and then, sometimes buying microwave, induction set,salad cutlery, this and that. These all items, after the lapse of time are destined to be layered with dust, without use. And, later on you find all these women engaged again in old fashion, in preparing conventional dishes,as usual.

Those traditional dishes of Halwa (porridge), vegetable based dishes, steaming potatoes in pressure cooker etc in the same old traditional utensils. Once in a blue moon, you may find them relishing non traditional foods at some food kiosk or local restaurant at an affordable price. But, what about the hard earned money of their men, they forced them to buy all those “of not in use appliances?”

This is the “labyrinth ” of so called “food channels.” They in connivance with companies, manufacturing “home appliances” project all these food programs. As such implicitly advertise there products, in an exciting manner or motivate easily trapped women, to buy all these items. These “food channels” are nothing but they accessorize the advertisement drive. The same drive we encounter in our day to day life in the field of cosmetic business or drug industry.
