Confusing weather of the 2024 —

A scrap of news, that I went through was, “This year of 2024 has been recorded as the hottest season worldwide.” In consequence, it evoked a hot debate about the factors leading to this hike of mercury. As far as about the city, I dwell in is a foothill city of the North west Himalaya of Indian region. If we talk of the Indian peninsula, this year  the hot summer season beaten all time records. In our India, the mercury flickered between 40 – 48 degree Celsius this year unexpectedly.  Even in home town, mercury jumped high up to 43 degree., that was an uncommon hike. Not long ago, just twenty years back, when mercury in summer season used to touch the bar of 32 degree Celsius, we denizens began to pant with our tongue loll out like a dog.

At that time, the AC were not in vogue. Only affluent class people used to install it in the houses for the sake of “social status.” In fact, water cooler sufficed the demand to suppress the hot air itching and AC were needed not at all. But after that period of time, my city witnessed the blind chase if irregular expansion of urbanization. This blind chasing made felling down of big numbers of orchards and the vast expanse of agricultural fields fell prey to the wave of colonization. The places, where green crops happened to get cultivated, there mushroomed up the jungles of concrete buildings. Even in small sized plots, multi -storied buildings got erected.

No place were left to grow new big shadowy and fruit producing plants. In the name of greenery, there came the trend of growing decorative  plants in the flower pots and creeping climbers on the fence.  Not only this, in the name of expansion of new roads, new roads planned to pass across the green forest belts. There too practice of corruption prevailed. If the permission to fell down one hundred trees were granted , on that excuse more than five hundred trees were rooted out. The corruptible administration in nexus with contractors availed every opportunity to accumulate the money.

Besides modernization and fast speeding industrialization brought a good deal of number of vehicles and other electronic gadgets as the home appliances. The sell of home appliances like fridge and AC marked  a high growth in this segment. These two appliances been counted to emit the gases causing green house effects. Besides, the pollution emitted by petrol, diesel gasoline based vehicles too played the main role in the global warming.

                                    The intent of this blog.

Now, I am coming to the intent of this blog. In fact, in an esteemed regional news paper, a scrap of news published recently during the season of hot waves. The caption ran as, “ the mercury broke the record of past 122 years!” This news was but to evoke a sensation in the so called intellectual circle. As we know, in our every social strata there always exists a “self magnanimous” intellectual class. You need not to declare  or identify or recognize them as an intellectual. They are prone to take them as such or suo – motto. We often find such group of people on every corner shop of the market.

The point of debate among these so called intellectuals was the content of caption. To them, it sounded that this present situation occurred after 122 years only; it means prior to that, human too witnessed this kind of hot waves!  Here was the point which agitated them to the extinction. Firstly, they deducted 122 years from the 2024 and found out that it was the year of 1902. It was so astonishing for them to imagine about the occurrence of hot waves at that time. But as it sounded by the caption of the blog, there it might have occurred, somewhere they were convinced about this.

The itching in their mind was, at that period of time no dense population existed, no vast industrialization had to exist. Naturally number of gadgets and vehicles to were so scarce. Besides dense forestation, huge vegetation and vast green lands were copious at that time.  Then what factors led to the occurrence of hot waves. Not only this, looking at the situation long back, the present factors of global warming are supposed to be fake one.

The arguments of these intellectual friends ostensibly carried  a weight, no doubt they sounded right on their part. But all their arguments rebutted by an old, shrewd type journalist at once. He too had cogency in his arguments. He said in his sermonizing style, “Friends, not long ago, every news paper used to have chief editor, assistant editors and subeditors in their staff of print media. Now a days, they own ‘news manager’ in stead of editor. This news manager has got the liability to coin a caption to mislead the readers only. In fact, the gist of this scrap of news is, for last 122 years only the data of weather climate was being recorded and maintained by the Meteorological department. They don’s have the records prior to that time. This year the heat wave broke the records of last 122 years records maintained as such. The temperature of the day this year surpassed the past maintained records only. Now you are left to expatiate this scrap of news as per your own ken.”

Since, I am too confused by the arguments of both the sides, hence I leave it at the discretion of the reader to consider, which one angle of the caption was correct! Penned by — Vinay Pharasi —–
