With the inception of globalization in India…..

Today’s era basically is of “minting the money” only. Just three decades ago , people were prone to “earning the money” but it was secondary in their priority. At the primary level they had insistence upon the observance of ethics and social norms. For instance, the profession of “journalism” or “publication of a newspaper” were laden with the inspiration and determination to built a healthy social system and propagate message pertaining to that drive ( less or more the same sentiments were observed in other professions, be it medical, education etc etc.) At that period of time the main and paramount means of communication was “print media.” Otherwise also, the medium of impressive communication was TV, but that ran under the control and aegis of government of India and followed the prescribed rules and regulations if Indian censor board. Even after, the social norms and ethics were maintained there. It was obvious from the restricted “advertisements” and “serials” aired on the singular TV channel of that time, they were so propitious to the extent that public watched all the programs freely along with entire family without any reserves.

Then came the time of introducing of new policies under the “new world order” pressure with a new name “globalization and liberalization of world trade” and influx of “private TV channels” we all witnessed in India; that forced government of India to remove all so called ‘restrictions’ imposed by Censor board and as on today multitude of TV channels relay programs we Indians can’t dare to watch along with family members owing to the bold contents. The influx of various channels too offered multiple choice. Now if Parents prefer to watch “news channel” meanwhile young generation is interested to watch “fashion or sport channel” and there is clash of choice in the same time slot. This helped to enhance the “consumerism”, that created the demand of more than one TV sets with in the family and later on with the introduction of android phone set harnessed with internet facility provided the another mode of entertainment which neither guided or directed by any censor board of any government nor follow any any set of ethics. some hopes were cherish from news channels but they too are infested with illness of “debate type” program akin to the “dog fight” amidst panelists on prime time slot, added with bold commercial ad and as such annihilating the “ethics.” They have only one target that is to collect the highest TRP only.

People in their forties and onward may just recall the inception of “family planning ad,” at the initial stage when got introduced on the government run channel i.e. Door Darshan ( India’s DD channel); how come the ad of “contraceptives” for man and woman embarrassed the parents watching TV program along with children. I did not intend to say that those “progressive ad” were not good but it,s truth as well that not so appreciated by public at large because of Indian family pattern and norms. Further, the factor of “sanskaras” too can not be denied in perceptive of India and they are not so weaker, in fact they are imbibed in our genetic code. This can be realized by this fact that the young generation who ridicules and mocked at the conservatism of parents at that erstwhile time, later on attaining the age group of fifty once again began to call for the same ethical norms and values.

Why is so? Answer lies in our genetic code which is so deeply saturated with ethical norms and values that can not be erased by any such light entertaining ad. Our social norms and values related to our social system have evolved after going through innumerable generations after generations. The prominent example of this is our “sanskaras” related to our religious rites which with the growing of age become stronger and stronger.

At last when I conclude the article, I would like to relate an anecdote of that time about the evil impact of newfangled telecommunications upon the innocent children. My one friend in the job of sales representative happened to remain on tour for days. Back at the home stayed his better half with a little son aged merely about five years old. So when he ventured to come back home, the affection of father for the little son prevailed over everything. Once on such occasion he found his little son crying and sobbing heavily. he queried the son cause of his agony. Son gave simple answer, “mother spanked me”, enraged father asked mother the reason for chastisement and the story which came out was hilarious or rather eyes opener. The boy was engaged in mischievous activities persistently that made mother blurt, ” Oh god !This only child has made my life hell, had there been two or more how would I handle the situation?” Upon this expression of mother child had a retort, ” Mom, certainly you consumed the Mala D tablets, otherwise you too would have other child.” ( Mala D was a female contraceptive pill of which add continuously relayed on every commercial break of government run channel and other newly introduced TV channels of that time.) After relating the incident, mother asked the father, ” tell me , what other option I had if not the chastisement?”

So gentleman, this sort of impact of globalization we all experienced with less or more degrees . At that bygone era a singular ad of contraceptive made to grow a child mature before the time . Now imagine of the present generation…Penned by — Vinay Phaaarasi….
