The “Short term memory” in perspective to flaw or boon …

Without delving into the ambit of “concept of memory and its types and effects,” the aspect of ‘short term memory’ is being described here, in social and psychological perspectives. In a previous blog, about the “concept of memory” an another article already been shared. In brief, “short term memory’ is a process of our mind that erases the impact of incidences occurred in the past. If not erases, then send them to the dormant memory bank, unable to register the presence in future so frequently. And if we press to recall them, that too reluctantly.

                                Impact of

The impact of this process of mind is beneficent or not is worth debatable. In our life, people who helped us to come out of our bad  circumstances, we begin to ignore them. Whilst people who helped us intend that we should always remember their timely help they extended to us. May be, they fostering a wish, on resuming to our good circumstances, we are supposed to compensate them.Why it happens, on our part? So that we begin to neglect our beneficent.

The reason may be, the lingering of bad circumstances and to sort out that, we needed the help of so many beneficent people.  In this duration, automaton process of short term memory helps to erase the bitter experiences, so we can live a normal life. This too erases the beneficent’ name. The another facet of this process is, our beneficent generally put us in the category of ” ungrateful person.”  In this automaton process, mind considers it as an essential property to protect us from over sentimentality.  It’s a weird process.

                                The Negativity

If mind does not follow this process, the man’s mind be overloaded with the “feelings of being obliged” heavily. This may hamper his further activities in this or that way. Though apparently it sounds a “selfish demeanor.”‘ In some people, this automaton process does not work efficiently. They become victim of mental disturbances. Other people having strong will power, overcome the sentimental havoc and emerge up as strong man. No doubt they are given ill- name, as selfish or opportunist.

                             In wider spectrum

How it effects socially. Here is paradigm of short term memory that becomes boon to a public figure. Often we find names of political leaders getting involved in some big scam, the scam apparently seems so vital. It stains the image of the leader and dents even image of the political party, he belongs to. For some days to come, it remains floating in the public arena as a chaotic incidence. But often we observe, after the lapse of time it erases from the public memory. It may happen in the way, after some days, another scam surfaces up that engages people currently.

Her again, by the same automaton process, people forget that. This often tomes occur in our social life. We remember an incidence when it has got some traumatic impact on us. But in that case it gets converted into the category of “long term memory.” In public life, leaders are well acquainted with this tendency of people, who are prone to “short term memory.” This induces them to get indulged in another corruptible practice.

There are multitude of examples, where leaders who got entangled in bad practices, but even continued to get elected in election. This all they did with the help of “flaw of short term memory” of public at large. But on the contrary, in personal life this short term memory often work as a boon by erasing the bitter experience of life.

At the end, the well known citation often psychologists quotes. “In our childhood, we had been subjected to hard discipline and chastisement of our parents and teachers. That was a must for our personality development. Had this short term memory automaton not worked as such, whole through our life we would live with a hatred towards them.” This could have vitiated our social family pattern.
